Strokes can leave people with long-lasting disability, which can include limited movement and weakness in upper limbs.

Intensive therapy, starting as soon as possible after the stroke, is the recommended way to maximise the amount of movement recovered.

However, providing the physiotherapist needed for at least a hour per patient per day places large demands on the NHS.

One possible solution is to use machines which help patients reproduce the necessary movements.

The Brown University trial tested a device called the MIT-Manus, specifically designed to help exercise the upper limbs.

The patient sits at a table with their upper arm in the device, and is then instructed to perform tasks with the arm. The robot senses their movement and helps if required.

The researchers described the robots as "power-steering" for the arms.

The study involved 127 patients who, on average, had suffered a stroke five years earlier.

They were split into three groups - one received "robot" therapy over a three month period, the next received the equivalent intensive therapy - carried out by a physiotherapist - while the third received "normal" healthcare, with no intensive treatment.

Quality of life

Both the "robot" group and the other intensive group had significantly improved upper-arm function - measured by how much better they could carry out everyday tasks such as using a knife and fork, opening jars or tying shoelaces.

The researchers involved have said they are delighted with the improvements - particularly given the years between stroke and treatment in the patients used in the research.

Dr Albert Lo, who led the study said: "We've shown that with the right therapy [patients] can see improvements in movement, everyday function and quality of life - this is giving stroke survivors new hope."

Dr Diane Playford, from the Institute of Neurology in London, is part of a team trying to develop similar robotic devices in the UK.

She is hopeful that, at some point, a machine compact enough to be used in the patient's home will be developed.

"The fact that these patients have improved function is exciting.

"We would normally think that patients who began therapy at an earlier stage could do even better."

However, she said that robots were still at an "early development" stage, and some years from full-scale use in the NHS.

Poetry Week

Contoh Pidato - The poem’s tone is that of a diary’s entries. There is no obvious pretension toward “poem”, no consciously literary phrasing. (Except perhaps the imbedded haiku moment of: “Clouds low / over Mt Coot-tha, an ibis / floating through rain”)

It sounds easy, seems deceptively simple, as the lines stagger and chat by, recording the weather, seemingly random personal matters, reading notes.

This is a one week poem: seven sections, Thursday through Wednesday. A narrative is haltingly happening: the plant on the balcony thrives despite its grey-thumbed owners; “huts on low ground” are cleared for “a new suburb”; and a struggle with the wayward self is underway too (“try to read poems / sleep instead”).

The speaker is ruminative, distracted, almost lazy — but also driven, lashing himself forward (“Concentrate!”). Opinionated despite humility, this poet is a student, but also a teacher. He searches for clues, but knows a “stupid” poet when he sees one.

Clues to what? The quandary is how to be a conscious or conscientious citizen.

How does one sustain a dialogue at as many valances as possible; in the daily, local, private and political body; but also in the public/private poem. This sequence may sound like journal entry, but it is also political, and philosophical.

We are meant to miss most of this; none of the poem’s considerable form or wisdom is tagged. Its casual nature and humour sweep us along.

Yet we are not in a barrel going over the “Prosaic falls”. These accomplished quotidian arabesques are jazz. There is shape here and a thesis on two levels: poetics and citizenry. Plus the two are linked.

Duggan knows “We all want the poem to escape / from our lives . . . or at least / for our lives to escape from the poem”. Similarly (later), are citizens of conscience prisoners in their own homes? Where (earlier) “property / is public only below the tidal mark”? Of sleep?

How does such a friendly poem end up disgusted at its end? We have been masterfully brought to knee depth in blue mud.

The last image is of books warping in the damp, turning yellow, their news dated so fast. Are our tongues mud already?

While seeming to just lounge about, take notes, fix the car, go to work (oh, here’s a letter from August — is that Kleinzohler?) — this poem, this poet, is doing the hard work of not simplifying or romanticizing muddle while continuing to celebrate & explore.

The Passenger, the book this poem is from, won for Duggan in Australia the 2007 Queensland Premier’s Literary Award. It is the best book of poetry I read last year. Interested readers might check out the poet’s blog called Graveney Marsh.

Laurie Duggan has renewed my hope that the lyric focus can be used to invite global-scoped essay-poems.

Contoh Pidato - Christina Sauer loves acting and performing, but when she heard about the American Legion Kentucky State Oratorical Contest, she wasn't interested. “I enjoy being up in front of people” when playing a role because she's someone else.

Naskah Pidato “I'm not used to being up in front of an audience being me,” said the 18-year-old Presentation Academy senior.

But Christina changed her mind and decided to enter the contest, both last year and this year, and “fell in love” with public speaking.

She won the state contest in February for the second consecutive year. She will advance to the national competition to be held in Indianapolis April 9-11.

Christina lives in Corydon, Ind., with her parents, Joseph and Cynthia Sauer, and her younger sisters Sarah and Rebecca.

When Christina was a junior, her U.S. history teacher, Deborah Hall, told her about the contest. “I looked at the Web site and saw you had to speak eight to 10 minutes about the Constitution with no notes,” she remembered, and quickly decided not to enter.

But over Christmas break, she began reading “Founding Sisters of the 19th Amendment,” a required book for her history class. “I spent three days reading that book; it was fantastic,” Christina said.

She liked the book because it turned facts into story. Also, she was inspired by Susan B. Anthony, herself an orator, and decided to give the speech contest a try.

Christina said she went through 10 drafts of her speech. Each time it sounded like a “boring history lecture.” So she returned to her original thoughts on the subject, the memory of enjoying Disney's “Mary Poppins.” She remembered the mother in the story “marching around wearing a banner” and singing about the suffragette cause.

“The wonderful world Disney created was far from reality,” she said. “What the suffragettes did was an incredible feat.” She said she admires those women for “taking responsibility for democracy, responding to a need and a call for action.”

Christina said she was surprised to learn of “the cruelty — what those women endured to get their basic rights.”

Pedagang Tradisional ‎

Puluhan massa mengatasnamakan Forum Pedang Tradisional (Forpeta) didampingi oleh Front Mahasiswa melakukan aksi di depan pintu masuk Carrefour Lebak Bulus. Mereka menolak putusan Pengadilan Negeri Jakarta Selatan yang menyatakan bahwa Carrefour tidak melakukan monopoli perdagangan.

Mereka menuding Carrefour memonopoli dan merugikan pedagang tradisional. Carrefour juga dianggap melanggar aturan zonasi, yang mewajibkan pasar modern memiliki jarak tertentu dengan pasar tradisional. "Di Depok, Carrefour membelakangi pasar tradisional Kemiri Muka, pedagang kecil ikut tergencet," kata juru bicara aksi Gatot Ahmad.

Hendri membantah tudingan Carrefour melanggar aturan zonasi. Carrefour, kata dia, selalu mengikuti aturan daerah. Di Jakarta, misalnya, Carrefour sudah berjarak 2-2,5 kilometer dari pasar tradisional yang dinaungi oleh PD Pasar Jaya. "Soal di Depok mungkin perlu dilihat peraturan daerahnya seperti apa."

Carrefour adalah salah satu pasar modern terbesar saat ini. Perusahaan itu memiliki 79 toko yang tersebar di 23 kota seluruh Indonesia dengan jumlah karyawan tidak kurang dari 20 ribu orang. Di Jabodetabek terdapat 42 toko, 26 diantaranya berada di Jakarta.

Julia Perez - DPP menyatakan, pimpinan daerah boleh saja mencari public figure untuk jadi kandidat, tapi jangan mengundang artis yang negatif. "Partai sangat dirugikan oleh publisitas negatif seperti ini," ujar Bima.

Karena itu, DPP tentu akan bertindak tegas kalau DPD Pacitan melangkah terlalu menyimpang dalam mencari bakal calon bupati. Namun Bima tak menjelaskan tindakan tegas seperti apa.

Sebelumnya Partai Hati Nurani Rakyat menyatakan wacana mengusung Julia Perez muncul setelah muncul sebuah survei yang menunjukkan elektabilitas Julia tinggi. Hanura berencana memasangkan Julia sebagai calon Wakil Kepala Daerah mendampingi calon Kepala Daerah yang diusung Hanura.

Namun, "ini juga baru alternatif," kata Yuddy Chrisnandi, Ketua Bidang Pemenangan Pemilu Hanura. Hanura mengajak tujuh partai termasuk PAN untuk ikut mendukung duet itu.

The back of a pickup is also not a good place for your dog to travel as he could be harmed by particles or debris or become sick from having air forced into his lungs when moving at a moderate to high rate of speed. He could also be thrown from the pickup bed in the case of an accident or sudden stop or he could jump from the pickup.

At least two hours before you start your trip, you need to feed and water your dog. Doing this immediately prior to starting out can cause an upset stomach, especially given the relative excitement of taking a trip. Frequent stopping at regular intervals to allow toileting, exercise and water should also be planned. The water should be given within 5 minutes of stopping and another 15 minutes allowed afterward to make sure that your dog's stomach has settled. Upset stomachs during travel are common but can be avoided if this method is followed when you take your dog on vacation. Based on the current oceanic surface temperatures, the scientists are predicting between 13 and 17 named storms, 7 to 10 of which will become hurricanes, and of those 7 to 10, 3 to 5 could be major hurricanes, a Category 3 or higher.

If the predictions are true, we only have to look back to 2005 to realize what we may have to look forward to here in Florida. We had widespread evacuations. Isi pesan tersebut, antara lain menyarankan agar pembaca berhati-hati dalam melakukan transaksi melalui Anjungan Tunai Mandiri (ATM), khususnya BCA, karena disinyalir beberapa ATM telah dipasangi alat yang dapat menduplikasi kartu ATM nasabah.

Hanya saja, pesan tersebut tidak secara spesifik menyebutkan bilik ATM BCA mana, atau di daerah mana saja yang mesti diwaspadai masyarakat. Penerima pesan hanya diingatkan untuk mencari ATM yang sudah memiliki pengaman kartu yang berwarna hijau.

Isi pesan tersebut antara lain adalah, "Dalam rangka pembobolan ATM BCA, perhatikan info berikut: para komplotan yang membobol BCA memasang mesin penyadap kartu AMT di mesin ATM-nya. Jadi magnetic kartu ATM kita tersadap, plus PIN-nya juga, dan mereka pun dapat membuat duplikat kartu ATM kita. Jadi sebaiknya, kalau mau ambil uang di mesin ATM BCA, carilah ATM yang di mulut mesinnya ada warna hijau, karena itu adalah sistem pengamannya. Infokan ke teman-teman anda yang lain. Thanks."

Pihak BCA sendiri, di pihak lain, langsung menanggapi informasi tersebut dengan menyampaikan pesan yang kurang lebih serupa. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk, dalam siaran persnya melalui Sub Divisi Komunikasi Pemasaran Aspek Hubungan Masyarakat, Rabu (20/1), mengakui adanya kejadian duplikasi kartu ATM tersebut.

Dalam rilisnya, disebutkan pula bahwa terkait masalah ini, pihak BCA telah melakukan beberapa tindakan pengamanan, agar kejadian serupa tidak terulang. Selain itu, BCA juga disebutkan mengambil langkah-langkah agar nasabah BCA tidak ada yang mengalami kerugian. Sementara itu menanggapi hal ini, Bank Indonesia (BI) dalam paparan persnya di hadapan wartawan, Rabu (20/1), menyatakan telah mengintruksikan bank-bank yang disinyalir telah dipasangi alat duplikasi tersebut, untuk melakukan pengamanan. "Hari ini BI sudah melakukan pertemuan dengan tiga bank, dan rencananya besok akan dilanjutkan dengan tiga atau empat bank lagi. Kami meminta bank untuk segera melakukan tindakan pengamanan terkait masalah ini," kata Deputi Gubernur BI, Budi Rochadi.

Produser Suster Keramas Minta Penjelasan

Rin Sakuragi menjadi salah satu artis yang paling Top di Indonesia setelah main dalam film Suster Keramas.Produser film "Suster Keramas," Ody Mulya, menemui Ketua MUI Samarinda, Kalimantan Timur, KH. Zaini Naim, untuk meminta penjelasan mengapa film yang dibintangi artis porno asal Jepang, Rin Sakuragi, itu ditolaknya.

"Selain bersilaturahmi, saya datang ke Samarinda untuk meminta penjelasan Ketua MUI Samarinda mengenai alasan penolakan film Suster Keramas itu," katanya di Samarinda, Selasa malam.

Ody mengaku, penolakan Ketua MUI Samarinda tersebut cukup beralasan karena film garapan "Maxima Pictures" itu berbau porno.

"Saya memahami alasan penolakan ketua MUI Samarinda itu, tetapi beliau menyatakan tidak berhak melarang pemutaran film itu dan hanya memberi imbaun moral kepada masyarakat. Saya juga sudah menjelaskan bahwa film itu tidak mengandung unsur porno, seperti yang dikhawatirkan," katanya.

Produser dari rumah produksi "Maxima Pictures" yang juga memproduksi film "Air Terjun Pengantin (ATP)" itu mengungkapkan adegan porno yang ada pada film "Suster Keramas" hanya menggambarkan fantasi pemuda berandal setelah melihat seorang gadis Jepang.

"Film itu sebenarnya tidak mengandung unsur porno. Adegan syur yang ditampilkan di film itu, menggambarkan khayalan dari pemuda berandal yang terobsesi melihat wanita Jepang. Jadi, kami berharap masyarakat tidak bersikap skeptis dulu sebelum melihat filmnya," katanya.

Mengenai judul "Suster Keramas" yang dikhawatirkan Zaini Naim, produser film "Sumpah Pocong di Sekolah" yang dirilis pada 2008 itu menegaskan bahwa hal bukan penggambaran aktivitas setelah melakukan hubungan badan.

Ia menjelaskan, film yang digarap selama 16 hari itu diangkat berdasarkan kisah nyata dari cerita beberapa orang tentang hadirnya sosok seorang perawat yang rambutnya terlihat selalu basah, seperti habis keramas.

"Film itu diangkat ke layar lebar berdasarkan cerita beberapa orang yang melihat sosok seorang perawat dengan rambut seperti habis keramas. Lokasi syuting dilakukan di Bogor, puncak dan Jakarta," katanya.

Film yang juga dibintangi Yadi Sembako itu menceritakan kedatangan gadis Jepang yang diperankan Rin Sakuragi ke Indonesia untuk menemui saudara tirinya yang menjadi perawat.

"Rin Sakuragi memerankan gadis Jepang yang datang ke Indonesia mencari saudaranya yang jadi perawat untuk memberikan warisan orang tuanya, namun saudaranya itu ternyata telah meninggal dan ia akhirnya bertemu dengan berandalan," katanya.

Kendati mendapat penolakan dari MUI dan salah satu ormas Islam, Ody Mulya mengaku akan tetap merilis film yang dibintangi artis porno asal Jepang pada 31 Desember 2009.

"Film itu tetap akan dirilis pada akhir tahun, sebab kami menilai film `Suster Keramas` bukan film porno," katanya
